Introducing Gavin Reedy

Gavin Reedy, Iwi Development Officer

Ko Hikurangi te maunga
Ko Waiapu te awa
Ko Ngāti Porou te iwi

Gavin is originally from Wainuiomata - Lower Hutt. He has lived in the Manawatu area for over 30 years in rural Halcombe near Feilding with his wife Denise, who is Ngāti Pikiahu - Ngāti Waewae.

Gavin had many jobs in his working life before receiving his Dip Tchg B.Ed from Massey University in 1997. This saw him working in primary and secondary schools around the Manawatu, and teaching at tertiary level for several years. He has also been involved with facilitating iwi relationships in education.

Since taking up his role with National Services Te Paerangi in 2007 Gavin has worked extensively with iwi around the New Zealand, presenting, negotiating, organising and facilitating workshops, and assisting in many projects

‘Iwi are really coming on board with what National Services Te Paerangi has to offer and this is evident in a number of current developments, iwi developing their own whare taonga (looking after their own treasures), telling their own stories, and looking at other strategies for advancement’.

Gavin is pleased to be involved with iwi, learning the many different stories that link iwi through a network of whakapapa, mana, warfare, reconciliation, aroha and a common will to progress through collaboration and forging relationships.

Away from Te Papa, Gavin is involved with art and iwi development projects. He enjoys carving and working with clay, loves diving and has joined the Mara Kai movement, growing traditional Māori vegetables and setting up whanau gardens.

Gavin and Denise’s’ adult children live in Australia, and they have one child still at home.
