  • We had a wonderful experience holding our wedding at Te Papa! From the booking process to the big day itself, we found the staff to be most helpful, knowledgeable, and accommodating. We initially booked Icon at Te Papa for our reception but after realizing that our wedding fell on the same day as the Homegrown concert, we decided to hold our ceremony there as well. Glenn Lust did a fantastic job coordinating the day. He found a stunning space for the cocktail hour while Icon was switched over from ceremony to reception area. Meanwhile we took our photos in the beautiful backdrop of Te Papa’s pond, which was nicely secluded from the concertgoers. The food was absolutely perfect! Every dish was cooked to perfection and our guests still talk about it! Throw a successful event

We’re here to help. One of our Venue Coordinators will be assigned as your main point of contact before, during, and after your event. Our experienced functions team know all the ins and outs of organising successful events, so if there’s anything you’re unsure about, just ask. We’re more than happy to help, offer advice, or recommend additional services. For larger and/or more complex events, you might want to consider using a professional conference organiser or an event management company to manage all or just part of your event.

Making sure your event has the wow factor

There are lots of ways to make an event successful and memorable. Cultural performances, mihi whakatau or pōwhiri (welcomes), and tour options are great ways to create a unique experience. Lighting and theming can make a great event spectacular.

We can help you come up with ideas to make your event really sing and can organise suppliers as necessary. We work with a wide range of people covering everything you can think of – decoration and theming, entertainment, lighting, audio visual, and exhibition solutions to name a few.


Catering is a big part of any function. The more we know about your function and your guests, the more we can tailor our catering to suit. Let us select the menu for you to maximise the benefit of our expertise, and to suit your theme and audience.

Event planning and budgeting

The secret to a smooth-running event is to check and double-check every detail. Start by writing a checklist. Useful starting points include:

  • programme and schedule
  • invitations / guest list / ticketing
  • marketing and promotional material
  • travel and accommodation
  • catering
  • room layout/displays/signage
  • audiovisual and technical details

We find that effective event party planning working backwards from the date of the event is the easiest way to set milestones and deadlines. Remember to book early to make sure you can get your chosen venue and check what else is happening before you confirm a date. School holidays, public holidays and other events in the city might affect your plans.

As part of your plan, you’ll want to prepare a budget. Include an allowance for unexpected expenses to save last-minute stress over finance.
