What are the options for schools visiting Te Papa?
You can bring your class for either an education programme or a self-guided visit. We offer a range of education programmes that can be adapted to suit your needs.

How much does it cost?
- Education programmes cost $6.50 per student. Teachers and parent-helpers are admitted free. If you are bringing a group of 15 students or less the minimum charge will apply, $97.50. Prices include GST.
- Self-guided visits are free of charge.
- Note: Some short-term exhibitions may have a charge, please discuss this with the Education Coordinator.
Do I have to book?
Yes, all schools visiting Te Papa must book. We recommend booking as far in advance as possible. We are unable to accept bookings for education programmes with less than two weeks notice.
How long do programmes last?
60 - 90 minutes, unless otherwise stated.
Our programmes can be adapted to fit your needs. Please let us know if you have time constraints.
The minimum number of adults required to accompany all school groups is:
- for secondary students - one adult to every twenty students
- for primary students - one adult to every six students
- for early childhood groups in the outdoor Bush City exhibition - one adult to every two children
- for other early childhood groups - one adult to every four children
Can I pre-book lunch?
Yes! Lunches can be provided by the Te Papa Cafe on Level 1.

Te Papa's opening hours are: 10am−6pm, and 10am−9pm on Thursdays.
Education programmes can be booked from 9.30am.
Self-guided visits can be booked from 10am.
We generally book school groups in on the hour and half hour. Please let us know your preferred start times when you make your booking.
What should I do if I want to come on a self-guided visit with my class?
Self-guided visits are most welcome. Please book your visit ahead of time by using the online booking form. On arrival, please report to a host at the main entrance.
How to find us
Te Papa is centrally located in Cable Street on Wellington's waterfront. It is within easy walking distance of Wellington's main shopping area. If you are driving south from Jervois Quay, you'll find us on the left just past the intersection of Cable and Taranaki Streets. Free bus parking is available in our main parking area.

Do you need help to plan your next visit to Te Papa?
Book your staff in for an orientation tour with one of the Te Papa Educators. This service is offered free and is designed to help you make the most of your time in the museum.
Let us know the learning intentions for your visit, and we will suggest the best education programmes and exhibitions to support your students’ learning.
There is no maximum or minimum number of teachers required. The tour takes approximately 1 hour.
