Community Relationships

Entrance to Te awa Tupua The Whanganui iwi exhibition

Te Papa’s relationships with communities throughout New Zealand, including iwi (tribal groups) and other Māori organisations, are critical to our overall success in telling the nation’s stories and supporting other museums and iwi to improve their services, as well as to our development as a bicultural organisation.

Iwi Relationships

Te Papa develops and maintains a broad range of relationships with iwi and Māori organisations, involving diverse levels of activity and input from both iwi and the Museum.

Repatriation

Te Papa is involved in a formal Repatriation Programme, involving  considerable research, to bring kōiwi tangata Māori and Moriori (Māori and Moriori ancestral remains) back to New Zealand and communities of origin.

Community Gallery

Te Papa's Community Gallery is part of the Passports exhibition, and is dedicated to telling the stories of the many communities that make up modern New Zealand

National Services Te Paerangi

National Services Te Paerangi works with museums, iwi, and related organisations to enhance museum services and support these to become self-sustaining.

Pacific Communities

Te Papa develops and maintains a broad range of relationships with Pacific communities in New Zealand and abroad. These revolve around the museums research, collection development, public programmes, and publications.
