NZMuseums Website

The NZMuseums website, www.nzmuseums.co.nz,  profiles approximately 360 New Zealand museums and related culture and heritage organisations. This site is being redeveloped into an exciting new site which will feature collections and stories of the museums of New Zealand, as well as being available as an online collection mangement system for museums. Read more about how you can be a part of this project.

NEW! Museums can still catalogue their collections online; however we can now not promise that the data will be on the new site when it launches on Wednesday 17 September 2008. Here's how!

Museum and Iwi Development Grants

The Museum and Iwi Development Grants Programme supports museums, iwi, and other culture and heritage organisations in projects that are part of a long-term plan and that:

  • contribute to achieving operational excellence
  • improve access to and understanding of collections and taonga
  • develop partnerships.

There are two funding rounds per year, and the next closing date will be announced shortly on this site.

There are no minimum or maximum amounts, although most grants fall in the range of $2,000 to $10,000.

Read the guidelines and criteria, and see a list of successful past applications.

Helping Hands Grants

The Helping Hands Grants Programme is a new programme from National Services Te Paerangi that aims to help small museums carry out their responsibilities. These responsibilities may include:

  • purchasing conservation materials
  • contracting consultants
  • accessing training or professional development opportunities.

Applications are welcome for any amount up to a maximum of $1,000. There is no cut-off date for Helping Hands Grants. Applications will be considered at any time on their merit. However, an organisation can make only one application per financial year.

Update as at 17 July 2008: The Helping Hands Grant grant programme is now open to applications. Find out more.
If you have an interesting story about what you did with your Helping Hands Grant funds let us know! We might feature your story as a case study on the website and in our e-newsletter.

Find Funding

The Cultural Funding Guide is a search engine to help arts, cultural, and heritage organisations match projects with potential funders started up on 23 April 2007. The easy-to-use funding guide is hosted by NZLive.com, the smart new cultural portal that went live in September 2006.

The Cultural Funding Guide is a collaboration between National Services Te Paerangi, Creative New Zealand, the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, and the Funding Information Service. Read more.

Museum Graduate Internship Programme

National Services Te Paerangi offers internships to recent graduates of museum studies as part of the Museum Graduate Internship Programme (MGIP). The internships are for up to three months to work on a specific project in a small, professionally staffed museum. The MGIP is being launched formally this year, the pilot having been completed and evaluated in 2007.

Two graduates have been offered MGIP internships during 2007–08.

We invite expressions of interest from museums that have projects to offer interns for the next programme (2008–09). The projects should be up to three months in duration.

Find out more about this project and how you can participate.

TelstraClear Freephone 0508 NSTP HELP

In partnership with TelstraClear, National Services Te Paerangi provides a freephone helpline service - 0508 NSTP HELP. The first of its kind, the purpose of this service is to provide improved access to information and advice to museums beyond the Wellington region at no cost to the caller.

This service is in response to the museum sector requesting more direct contact with National Services Te Paerangi staff as reported in the Triennial Review completed in December 2005. While we cannot guarantee that there will be someone staffing the phone at all times due to the limited capacity of the team, we aim to return all calls made within the next working day.

By having an information kit at hand, the team will be able to act as a broker for information and respond quickly and efficiently to the needs of museums New Zealand wide. We would like to help you in these areas:

  • Governance, Management & Planning
  • Care of Collections and Taonga
  • Public programmes (including exhibitions)
  • Relationships with communities

So, if you have any queries regarding these or any other matters concerning your museum, please do not hesitate to give us a call on TelstraClear 0508 NSTP HELP (0508 678 743). While we may not have all the answers, we will be able to point you in the right direction so we hope to hear from you soon!
