I spy for Conservation Week

Meet some of your lesser-known neighbours this Conservation Week! At NatureSpace, we’ve chosen 10 native plants and animals that you can find in and around Wellington. So next time you are in NatureSpace Discovery Centre...

  1. Look at the photos and check out the specimens on the Explore trolley.
  2. Take a handout and get hunting!
  3. Come back to NatureSpace and stick your discoveries onto the map using the coloured stickers.

You have until the end of November to report back. If you’re not sure about something you find, take a photo and bring it in. We’ll do our best to help you identify it.

Conservation Week runs from Sunday 9 to Sunday 16 September.

Inspiring photographs - previous display

by Bryce McQuillan, amazing amateur photographer

I've always had a huge interest in spider and insects. When I was about 19, Don Horne, a nature photographer, visited me at home one evening. He wanted to take photos of my pet Avondale spiders (or Australian huntsman spiders) which I had been breeding. This inspired me to start photographing.

My favourite subjects are frogs, tunnel web spiders, and jumping spiders. They're not the easiest subjects to get close to, so when you finally get a good photo you feel like you've really achieved something.

Maybe these pictures will inspire you to pick up a camera and start clicking.  What would you photograph?

Check out more of Bryce's photographs on his web page.
