Discovery Centres 

Discovery Centres are places specifically designed for children and families to visit, and are full of hands-on exhibits and games as well as magazines and books. Visitors are encouraged to explore, touch, play, ask questions, research and learn.

Staff are on hand to answer your questions. You can also find reference books and magazines associated with the specialist area of each centre. 

Te Huka ā Tai

Te Huka ā Tai Discovery Centre is a space for tamariki (children) that celebrates te ao Māori – the Māori world. Try your hand at weaving, play games with tī rākau (rhythm sticks), dress up and practise poi (balls on cords), and walk on stilts. Taonga old and new are on display, and you can find reference books in the research room. Located on Level 4

Inspiration Station

Inspiration Station, Te Papa’s art and history Discovery Centre. Here, you can see our Big Baby, the ‘It’ Monster, and the ever-changing display of Delectable Collectables. There are some great activities as well! Play shop in the Kiwi Corner Store, or create a Flash New You with a funky range of dress ups. Located on Level 4


Te Papa’s natural environment will take you on an incredible journey through the natural world. At NatureSpace you step inside a dinosaur footprint, crawl in to a whale heart, inspect an insect under a microscope, find a fossil, and much more. NatureSpace rocks! Located on Level 2

PlaNet Pasifika

PlaNet Pasifika showcases the diversity of expression and creativity amongst the people of Pacific Island nations. It looks at celebrations in Pacific cultures, and concentrates on body adornment and the cultural importance of tattoo, tīvaevae, and tapa. Bang a drum or strum a ukulele, make a lei, or just chill out with a good book! Located on Level 4
