Winifred Knights’ painting The Marriage at Cana (1923) is on display until 20 July.  For the first time, the painting appears alongside a selection of Knights’ meticulous preparatory drawings.

Chelsea Nichols, Curator Modern Art, will present a floortalk in the gallery and will refer to the preparatory drawings to illustrate the layers of meaning within the painting.

The Marriage at Cana is one of the treasures in Te Papa’s collection of early 20th century British art.  The work was inspired by religious imagery in Renaissance painting and reimagines the biblical miracle of turning water into wine.
