Loaf of Bread

Loaf of bread

Plaster copy from carbonised original
A bakery, Pompeii

This carbonised bread loaf, found in an oven at Pompeii, must have been abandoned when Vesuvius erupted. Pompeians ate bread with most meals — with fruit at breakfast, and dipped in olive oil or to sop up sauces and stews at lunch and dinner.
