Jason Greig

Into the dark

With his monoprints, Jason Greig evokes a sense of the occult and the mysterious – of something hidden just beyond our understanding.

His works draw from a wide range of sources. The title Seven years of labour for the instruments of time comes from the lyrics of rock opera Imaginos (1988), by progressive rock band Blue Oyster Cult. Gideon, which translates from Hebrew as ‘the destroyer’, recalls the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), by Irish writer Oscar Wilde.

Jason Greig is a New Zealand printmaker who has become particularly well-known for his monoprints. With the monoprinting process, no two prints are ever the same.

This text was prepared for the Collecting Contemporary exhibition, February 2012.
