Kettle drum, HMS New Zealand
Kettle Drum 1913, Hawkes and Son (1860–1930), London. Gift of the Navy Office, Wellington, 1925. Te Papa
This kettle drum was presented by the Women's Patriotic League to HMS New Zealand during the battlecruiser's triumphant 1913 visit here. The gift was 'a memento of the loyalty of the women and girls of the Dominion'.
New Zealand had offered the ship to Britain 4 years earlier. Its visit to these shores prompted locals into a frenzy of gift-giving to show their British allegiance.
