Iwi Relationships Team
Purpose statement
The Iwi Relationships Team upholds relationships between Te Papa and Māori (iwi, hapū, whānau, Māori organisations, communities and individuals) through advocacy, oversight, leadership, and strategic advice. The team creates, builds, activates, supports, maintains, and manages enduring and meaningful relationships, engagements, and expressions of mana taonga across Te Papa.
The team cares for Rongomaraeroa as a vibrant and welcoming Marae in partnership with tangata whenua for all of our manuhiri.
Action statement
The Iwi Relationships Team achieve this by acting as a conduit and effective advocate, exemplifying manaakitanga, delivering consistent communications, seeking opportunities that enhance engagement and interactions between Te Papa and Māori.
In addition to managing the relationships and interface between Māori and Te Papa, the team is responsible for key programmes of work including: the Iwi in Residence programme, Maramataka, and Matariki (in partnership with Public Programmes Team), Taikura Kapa Haka, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi settlement negotiations and post settlement relationships.
Aspiration statement:
The Iwi Relationships Team aspire to intentionally whakamāori Te Papa towards being a Te Tiriti-led museum and to shift our whare – its processes, engagement, strategy, ways of working, being, and doing, into a space that is a warm, welcoming, and meaningful place for tangata whenua.
The team aspire to have trusted, active relationships with iwi and Māori across the motu to engage and support their self-determination.
