From Tuesday 17 September 2024, Te Papa will introduce a museum entry ticket of NZ$35 for international visitors aged 16 years and older.

Entry to the museum will remain free for all New Zealanders and people living in New Zealand.

  • Who will be charged?

    • International visitors aged 16 years and over.

  • I live in New Zealand on a visa, do I need to pay?

    • No, if you are on a visa issued by Immigration New Zealand that allows you to live in New Zealand, you can enter the museum for free.

  • Will my family visiting from overseas need to pay?

    • Yes, if they are not New Zealanders and are aged 16 years or over, they will need to buy a ticket.

  • I am visiting from Tokelau/the Cook Islands/Niue/the Ross Dependency , do I need to pay?

    • No, you are a New Zealander, so entry is free.

  • What about New Zealanders who live overseas?

    • New Zealanders (citizens and permanent residents) who live overseas do not have to buy a ticket.

  • How will you decide who is an international visitor?

    • We will rely on people to self-identify. The entry experience will be welcoming and easy. 

  • How will international visitors pay?

    • International visitors can pay in the museum at the Tickets desk on Level 2, or online.

  • Do I need to show someone my ticket?

    • You may be asked to show your ticket if you have pre-purchased online, so please make sure you have it ready on your phone or printed out.

  • How will you decide who is a New Zealander?

    • We will rely on people to self-identify. The entry experience will be welcoming and easy. 

  • What do I need to bring to prove I live in New Zealand?

    • You do not have to prove you live in New Zealand or bring any evidence of this when you visit.

  • Can I get a refund? 

  • What is included in the entry ticket price?

    • The entry ticket covers general admission to the museum. Parking, tours, paid exhibitions, StoryPlace, and some events require separate tickets.

  • Can I buy a tour as well?

    • Yes, if you need an entry ticket and would also like to book an Introducing Te Papa tour, you can pay for both at once, online or at the museum.

  • Will there still be temporary paid exhibitions and other paid experiences?

    • Yes, Te Papa will continue to have some paid exhibitions and other paid experiences, which will be additional to museum entry.

  • How long is my ticket valid for? Can I leave the museum and come back in?

    • The ticket is valid for 48 hours from the entry date printed on it and you can enter, leave, and re-enter as many times as you like within this period.

  • Where does the money go? What does it contribute to?

    • The money will be used to fund Te Papa’s core work of telling the stories of Aotearoa New Zealand, and caring for and providing access to the taonga and collections.
