“I try and use taonga or flora and fauna that’s already on the ground – because I feel like it was never meant to be if it’s not on the ground....I don’t want to be a taker. If I haven’t planted the flower, I won’t go and pick it... it’s a way for me to capture the mauri and the wairua of the spaces that I travel to near and far – kind of like how our taonga are in museums. They’ve travelled far. But this way I’m not taking, I’m bringing mauri back from that space, and I’m keeping it in my own archives.”
– Cora-Allan
In 2023, Cora-Allan Lafaiki Twiss journeyed around Aotearoa by boat, retracing the late 1700s voyages of James Cook and the Pacific people who accompanied him.
At each stop, she made works on hiapo using whenua whenua and cyanotype – a form of cameraless photography.
