Nike Savvas is a leading contemporary artist from Australia. Trained as a painter, Savvas works fluidly across sculpture, installation, kinetic and light-based media.
As a student of painting in the 1980s, I was inspired by the wonderful and varied transformations that painting had undergone in the recent past.
As a painter, I became increasingly dissatisfied with its assumed two-dimensionality and the prescribed limits and materials normally associated with painting.
Nike Savvas’ conceptually grounded works draw inspiration from a range of references including film, painting and systems logic. In her large-scale installations space is dynamically transformed through colour, light, movement and optical effect that create an experiential zone of physical and sensory immersion.
Savvas has created a number of large-scale installations for the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, Leeds Art Gallery and the Southbank Centre in London.
