Watch: Matt Pine, Māori artist

This video is the last recording made with senior Māori artist Matt Pine a few months before his death in 2021. Pine talks about his approach to art-making, and the centrality of the Whanganui River in his practice. He discusses significant works including sculptures from his series ‘High Water Works’ (1981) and ‘Trap Work’ (1982).

The video was mainly filmed at the Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua in Whanganui. Pine had a long association with the gallery and its director Bill Millbank.
