For Te Wiki o te Reo Māori | Māori Language Week, National Services Te Paerangi are hosting a zoom hui to discuss museums across Aotearoa that have Māori names. The panel is made up of speakers from various whare taonga who can share about the process of developing a Māori name by drawing on their organisation’s unique position, kaupapa and aspirations. Facilitated by Victoria Esson Head of Sector Development, National Services Te Paerangi, the speakers will include:
Philip Howe, Director of the South Canterbury Museum, which now carries the name Te Kura Marumaru
Laura Vodanovich, Director of the Hawkes Bay Museum, which now has a reo Māori name for each of their sites, MTG has been renamed Kahukura and the new storage facility in Hastings has been named Amokura, Hawke’s Bay Museum
Rachel Wesley, Kairaupī Taoka Māori | Curator Taoka Māori at Tūhura Otago Museum will speak to the development of the Māori name for the museum.
